The Obsidian Monolith Podcast / Re: What do you think?
« on: September 02, 2014, 05:59:52 pm »
The podcast so far has been inspirational to me so far.

I'm not intending to run my own whole campaign, as I prefer to be on the player side of the screen. I've always had a fiction-writing bug, and I'm crafting a 3-hour-ish one-shot now.

The OM episodes definitely help me in thinking about how to structure things as a story to be played and shared rather than the packaged short fiction I've written before.

Keep up the great work!

I'm definitely interested, but it depends on the times and dates. Keep us posted!

Gah! Still waiting on my PDFs, despite my gently nagging them...

Cypher System / Re: Looking to see how other GMs handle this.

The Onslaught esotery is what you're thinking of from Numenera. I don't yet have my pre-ordered PDFs for The Strange, so I can't comment on Sinfire Blast directly.

The flavor text for Onslaught makes it very much an either/or choice for what type of damage it is. However, it is designed as a single-target ability. But were it to function as an AoE, I would argue that the PC must choose which venue to focus their attacks through, as though they were separate abilities.

Though making any exception to game rules or personal guidelines is a great entrance for a GM Intrusion. You could allow them to manifest multiple facets of an ability like this simultaneously, but perhaps it overloads their mind, or strikes the PCs as well as the target NPCs.

As a player of many MMOs over the years, I can't recall an AoE ability that I've used that isn't a single effect or damage type.

They both got too rich for my blood! I'll have to be content just shaking their (and Shanna's) hands at some point during that weekend...

Numenera / Re: Language & Literacy in the Ninth World

Without spoiling "The Beale of Boregal", I'd have to say I loved the irony with that story, that their language is called "The Truth"...

The Strange / 9 Worlds in One
« on: July 10, 2014, 09:40:20 pm »
Not sure how playable this idea would be, but it's been a fun thought experiment for me...

There's been talk of playing the Numenera setting as a recursion existing in The Strange game. The thought I had springs off the idea of conflating the two games.

What if the world of Numenera was the Ninth World because Earth and eight major recursions suffered some sort of collapse, by some error or disturbance of the Strange, where all nine worlds were fused into one.

It could explain the hodgepodge landscape of bizarre and unrelated structures, the massive variety of plant and animal life, and the mash of physics that allow for the magical and the technological to coexist.

Thoughts?

Ask Lex / Breakfast and an Intrusion
« on: July 10, 2014, 09:25:41 pm »
Let's start off with an easy question, but fraught with internet repercussions: Pancakes or waffles?

-----

"After your first bite of the strange food, you get a growling feeling in your stomach and a compelling urge to eat the rest of the portion."

If the player accepts the intrusion by eating the rest of the food, they do so ravenously, without care for appearances or propriety, and are compelled to finish every last crumb and lick every finger.

After a minute, a belch is followed by a horrible pain in their stomach. The player must attempt a Might Defense of difficulty 4.

If they fail, they painfully expel the contents of their stomach, the mess composed of materials appearing nothing like the food they just ate.

If they succeed, the pain soon goes away, but in ten minutes they similarly expel their stomach contents: a small cypher, oddity, or pile of shins.

I'm looking forward to this coming out - I already have my pre-order in for the PDFs.

I've participated in a small playtest of it, and I have to say it was fun! My favorite part was [CONTENT REDACTED]

GM Intrusions Podcast / Re: The Obsidian Monolith has begun!

I'm looking forward to it! I'm only a Tier 0 Patron though, so I'll have to wait :(

I'd donate more, but then all the other podcasts I Patreon-ize would hear about it, and I don't want to deal with that headache...

Yay, forum! And I wanted to offer up my own kudos for a great podcast!

But I can't decide which Starwalker's avatar I like better - Indiana Jones or Motoko Kusanagi?
